Acquiring Skills to Overcome Poverty: Story of Baby Faiz.

Two years back, Baby Fiaz made her way to Talitha Koomi Center, hopeful she would find an avenue to fulfill a dream to learn sewing and help provide for her family of five. She was nervous about would they be willing to teach her how to sew. Although she lives very close the Talitha Koomi, but many times she shied away from entering Talitha Koomi Center.

Baby was married at the very early age. She have three children with age range 17, 15 & 7 year. Baby’s husband, Fiaz, drives a three-wheel loader rickshaw. Because it was a “low-quality, low-productivity job,” his earnings barely provided for the family’s most essential needs especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

When she joined the training, hope building within her. If she acquired sewing skills, she could earn extra income that would tremendously help her family. Answering the question, she said she could hardly ever buy the milk that her youngest kid needed for nourishment. Then she decided to came out learn and earn for my family.

With every skill Baby mastered, she grew more and more confident of fulfilling her dreams. After year long training, She was equipped with the knowledge and skills she needed to get her family out of poverty.

Her one consolation was that her children could go to school. —a future Baby wished she could give her children now.

After completing the training, Now she is engaged with some tailoring shops. She works at home and carried out different tailoring tasks given by that shops. Daily she earns as much as his husband. She is happy that she could provide nutritious meal to the family. She dreams of starting her own tailoring business and own sewing machine.

According to The World Bank, “One third of the working age population in low- and middle-income countries lack the basic skills required to get quality jobs, leaving them unable to achieve their full productive potential and limiting economic investment and growth.”

We believe once women learn to earn, control and manage their money they will be more confident and empowered. They will be less vulnerable of being exploited. Baby proved it.

Economic empowerment program was initiated so that women are able to learn different skills enabling them to become economically independent.
